In the articleLet’s Talk About Colorblindness and Racism in The Mosque, Nzinga Muhammad outlines the dual forms of societal and intra-Muslim racism to which Black Muslims are subject and with which they must struggle in their daily lives. MSiA-LI: Midterm Mocktail Mixer

The Fall Semester midterm period can be a stressful time for the adult learner. It marks a point during the term where students must take time to assess where they are in their studies and how to make sure they don’t fall behind.  In addition to all the academic demands, students must find ways to fit studies into the numerous familial, communal, and professional celebrations marking the holiday season.

The MSiA Midterm Mocktail Mixer is an opportunity to join fellow ESC students, enjoy refreshments, and engage in discussions that will help you organize and better manage your time when there seems to be so little of it available.

DADDY DON’T GO SCREENING

If there are any MSiA members in the Hudson or Northeast areas there are events co-sponsored by MSiA you may be interested. The film screenings of “Daddy Don’t Go” on Sept 19 (Newburgh) and 21 (Schenectady). You may sign up on the college’s event page for either (or both!).
“Daddy Don’t Go” is a tough but tender journey that aims to illuminate the everyday struggles of

disadvantaged fathers. This intimate, verité film pays homage to every man who negates the

“deadbeat dad” stereotype with a deep love for his children. By allowing the viewer extraordinary access into the daily lives of its subjects, “Daddy Don’t Go” will remove the negative lens through which underprivileged fathers are currently viewed and offer audiences a new image of the American family.

MSiA 2016 Election Results

board picThe SUNY Empire State College Minority Students in Action club’s 2016 Election results are available. The 2016-2017 executive board comprises of new and existing members.

The Communications Coordinator position is still vacant, and we are seeking to have it filled.  We would like the MSiA board to be as diverse as possible and reflective of our organization’s commitment to inclusion. So far, this is the first year that a male member will not be serving on the executive board. Therefore, we encourage our male members to consider applying. Please contact us at msia4students@gmail.com to express your interest in serving on the executive board.

We are looking forward to an exciting year with our standard activities focused on enhancing the academic lives of our members and SUNY Empire State College students. There will also be the return of the Pathway Adult Literacy Program with Eastern Suffolk BOCES as well as new events that will help raise social awareness and provide the opportunity for members to pay it forward in their college community.

To the Minority Students in Action Club members,

I am honored to have been considered for this award, and grateful for having received it.  Thank you all so much for taking the time to think about the good work that chosen mentors do at this college.  It is very motivating to receive such an award.  It is a unique and powerful confirmation that I am doing some things right !  This club has been a needed service to students, faculty, staff and the community.   I have been promoting it to all of the students I work with.  I am looking forward to collaborating with MSiA in the future.
