MSiA 2016 Executive Board Nominees

Co-President 1 – Layla Abdullah-Poulos:  Layla recently graduated from the SUNY Empire State College School for Graduate Studies with  a Master of Art and Advance Certificate in Women and Gender Studies. She will complete an Advance Graduate Certificate in American Studies during the upcoming academic year. An aspiring academic, Layla uses her knowledge not only to develop her own scholarship but also that of her fellow Empire students.  Through her work as a learning coach at the college’s Long Island location, she endeavors to assist students in achieving academic success.  A proponent for the enrichment of higher education through diversity, she plans to continue her work as an educator who conveys to students an ethnically diverse historical awareness and furnish them with the skills necessary to acquire political proficiency and constructively affect global policy and change.

Melinda and Robert (2)

Co-President 2 – Melinda Wills-Stallings: Melinda recently graduated from the SUNY Empire State College Long Island Location with an Associate of Science degree. She will continue studying at the college to attain her bachelor’s degree. Melinda served as the MSiA treasurer for two years and is the Long Island representative for the Student Affairs Committee.  Melinda has extensive experience in Early Childhood Education and Childcare, having been an Administrative Director for 12 years at a local nursery school and child care center. Melinda has a Child Development Associate Credential, a National Administrator’s Credential, and is an Aspire NY Early Childhood Level 4 Registered Professional Trainer. She is also certified in First Aid, CPR, AED and Medication Administration Training.


Treasurer – Eleni Moraites recently graduated from the SUNY Empire State College Long Island Location with a Bachelor of Science. She will be pursuing a Masters of Business Administration in the School for Graduate Studies. Eleni is proficient in bookkeeping and recording keeping and she is dedicated to helping her fellow ESC students overcome obstacles to their academic achievement.

Communications Coordinator – OPEN Nominations for this post will be accepted on the election ballot. Please add the name of the person you would like to nominate. It is okay to nominate yourself. The executive board will select one or more final nominees to present in a special election.

12795539_236815156656250_5704914412081586226_nMember at Large 1 – Tanya Thompson: Tanya Thompson is an alumna of SUNY Empire State College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Community and Human Services.  Presently, she is a candidate for a Master of Art in Adult Learning at the college’s School for Graduate Studies. Thompson utilizes her study to assist her fellow students as a peer tutor and through her work in numerous student groups. Thompson serves as co-chair of SUNY ESC Education for All, where she dedicates her energies towards equality in higher education.

Member at Large 2 – Ruth Castro: Ruth is pursuing a degree in Community and Human Services at the Long Island Location. She has been a dedicated member of MSiA since the club’s inception and has dedicated her time and energy in supporting her fellow members in their academic and community service endeavors. Ruth played and integral part attaining signed letter for the Protect Students of Color from Racism campaign, and she helped raise funds for the Empire Student Leadership Institute team H-HATS’s outstanding social action project that will provide school supplies to students at the Barack Obama Elementary School in Hempstead, NY.
